Wisdom teeth are the 3rd molars that usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. In many cases, the wisdom teeth do not come out completely and remain partially or completely covered with gums. Your dentist may recommend the extraction of a wisdom tooth in the following cases:- Presence or prevention of an infection,
- Inflammation of the gums around the tooth,
- Damage to an adjacent tooth,
- Cheek irritation,
- Decay,
- Advanced periodontal disease (gum disease).
Your dentist will need to take a panoramic x-ray (full mouth x-ray) before performing the extraction to properly assess the position of the tooth, especially in relation to the sinuses and nerves.
